Woofers

A woofer covers the low-frequency range, and its behaviour is set by the motor, the cone and the suspension together. Diameter, magnet type, cone and surround material are the first values to compare; cabinet volume and tuning decide the rest.

How do I pick a diameter for my cabinet?

Start from the cabinet volume and the cut-out you already have. A larger diameter is not automatically better - it has to suit the enclosure and the target low-frequency extension.

Ferrite or neodymium magnet?

Neodymium saves weight, which matters in flown or portable systems. Ferrite is heavier and usually cheaper for the same motor strength. Both are valid; the choice is about the application.

What does the cone material change?

Paper is light and well damped, composites are stiffer and can play louder before breakup. The right choice depends on the target bandwidth and the power level.
